Social Responsibility and Archives:

Preserving Marginalized Communities to Create a Fuller Picture of Humanity

Abstract:

Archives have a responsibility to preserve all of humanity, even more so in a world that continues to discriminate against and ignore the involvement of marginalized peoples in not only the past but the present as well. When the roles of marginalized peoples in history, as well as the present, continue to be hidden, ignored, or modified in any way, it affects the lives of not only those that are a part of those communities, but those who are on the outside of marginalized communities as well. The research examined in this paper works toward remedying these issues caused by homogeneity and white supremacy in the archival profession. But more work still needs to be done to include marginalized voices and histories in archives.
